a historic vote on Monday the European Union banned the use of bee-harming
pesticides across the continent for a minimum of two years, garnering praise
from environmental groups who have said that the population of the vital
pollinators, along with the global food supply are in grave danger, due to the
widespread use of the chemicals.

The
vote is the first of its kind and suspends three of the world's most
widely-used pesticides—known as neonicotinoids. However, critics have said the
two year suspension is not enough, meaning bees are not safe until the
chemicals are banned permanently.

Though
the vote did not reach the required majority under EU voting rules, the hung
vote moves to the European commission (EC) who will implement the ban.
"It's done," an EC source told the Guardian.

pesticide industry influence, a majority of countries voted to place a two year
restriction on three neonicotinoid products linked to a wide-range of harms to

pesticides pose an unacceptable risk to bees and their use should be
restricted. Along with habitat loss and pathogens, a growing body of science points

landmark suspension is a victory for millions of environment campaigners
concerned about dramatic declines in bees who were backed by experts at the
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). But it is a serious defeat for the
chemical companies who make billions a year from the products and also UK

production.

suit and listen to growing scientific evidence, rather than voices from the
pesticide industry:

as a result of this ban, the bee colonies recover in Europe but not in the US,
that ought to be enough to swing the agribusiness interests in favor of a
pesticide ban.

Seemingly
true, but It probably is not gonna be that simple.
The EU ban must be for a long enough
time to realistically potentiate the bees' recovery and then be scientifically
documented -- and it looks like 2 years won't be enough for this, either way.
If this is a purposely false test
protocol (which most environmental scientists suspect it IS), but it therefore
nevertheless officially seems to "exculpate" this particular class of
pesticides, then you can be sure that the pesticide companies who make the
products in question will scream bloody murder about how utterly definitive and
objective the tests were, and how unfairly they are being persecuted and made
the boogieman in CCD.
And then, once a purposely
unrealistic but "official" test like this fails, it'll be all the
harder to get it re-done properly. The
EU ban should either be done honestly or not at all. But I guess it's too late
for that distinction, now. How insane.

Obama's EPA - which continues to exemplify the utmost in craven subservience to

first 'social' Bees are estimated to be from 65 to 200+ million years old,
depending on sources. Flowers, less controversially, are estimated to be at
least 130 million years old. Some have speculated that the rapid diversification
of flowers was facilitated by the bees, something to consider...

wants to bet that the two European chemical concerns that lobbied furiously
against this ban, Bayer and Syngenta, will enlist aid from Monsanto and
Con-Agra when renewal comes up in two years. One can already see Monsanto's
shills rubbing their hands with glee as a lucrative contract to get this ban
revoked is in the offing. The European anti-pesticide forces would be well
advised to do their opposition research, as this is not over by a long shot.

to the language and you can understand these people better. "Food
production." Factory farming. CAFO. Manufactured food. People don't "produce" food. It
grows, just like dandelions (which you can eat).
