rally in Washington for second annual Occupy the Department of Education

Teachers and education activists
from near and far descended on the Department of Education in Washington D.C.
this weekend to announce their "war cry" against the corporate-based
school reform movement and its stranglehold on public education.

Protesters at the second annual
Occupy the Department of Education, which took place from April 4-7, are trying
to draw attention to the rampant privatization of public education which has
benefited greatly from President Obama's Race to the Top initiative, as well as
the rash of public school closures—most notably in Chicago, Washington D.C. and
Philadelphia.

word, referring to a specific agenda of high-stakes testing, weakened collective
bargaining, and school closings that have generated massive instability for
American children, particularly low-income people of color. [...]

for decades of growing income inequality, an eroding social welfare system, and
an economy brought to its knees by lack of regulation—factors which make work
in building supportive, democratic schools and classrooms that much more

Following a march to the White House
on Saturday, protesters on Sunday rallied on the steps of the DOE. Attendees
include notable education activists Diane Ravitch, Deborah Meier of Central
Park East schools, and Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis.

Mother Jones quotes event organizer and Colorado teacher, Peggy
Robertson, who says that President Barack Obama’s Race to the Top
initiative—which she calls “No Child Left Behind on steroids”—has “opened the
door” to the privatization of public education.

This initiative, she says, requires
states accept certain conditions to receive adequate education funding creating
competition, rather than collaboration, among states. Their demands include the
implementation of controversial Common Core standards as well as an opening of
more corporate-run charter schools, a "longitudinal database full of
student information to track performance," and teacher evaluations based
on high-stakes standardized testing.

And why isn’t this out front
national news????????? Teachers are finally getting it together, despite the
failure of their union leadership in the past couple of years (bravo Chicago
for our new example). Go teachers! You are the best! Give them HELL for what
they have taken from you and what you have endured. You work way too hard for
the money.... you should be making 250,000 a year and those asses over in Wall
ST. who punch in numbers should make 8.00 per hour! More teachers should run
for office and do right by this society. Fire all the lawyers. And we need many
more women- everywhere in our government, period.

union leadership did not fail. They
purposely channeled the energy and anger of their members into the dead-end
that is the Democratic party in order to hang on to their six figure salaries
and continue collecting dues.

mass firings of teachers, obsessive test giving and privatizing of schools is
being led along by Obama's "Race To The Top" which financially
rewards districts for obliterating public education.

teachers need to form a truly independent union that represents THEIR interests
and is not aligned with either political party.

There's been a longstanding
controversy in several threads here at CD between those who believe the
attitudes of ordinary people effectively consent to the depredations of the
plutocrats in forging eternal warfare and permanent ecocide, and those who find
that addressing popular attitudes distracts from the culpability of the
plutocrats. IMHO, both sides of this controversy make excellent points: the
plutocrats are primarily responsible, but their most crucial success has been manufacturing
the popular consent which keeps them in control.
Like the corporate dominance of news
outlets (which naturally ignore actions like this by conscientious teachers),
the destruction of public education serves the ascendant plutocrats in several
ways. A privatized education system, largely financed by tax dollars like the
privatized health-care system, is a huge profit center. Nurses and teachers are
just about the only effective unions left standing, so finally destroying them
will be a huge win for the predators. Throwing poor kids under the bus is a
good way to restore the plutocrats' Dickensian ideal.
But the aspect of destroying public
education which has the most enduring value for our corporate masters is maintaining
their mastery by perpetuating ignorance.

privatization is the death of
democracy.
Is this what these greedy
corporations call "reform". I call it privatization and it seems to
be a characteristic of the times we live in - everything is seen as having the
possibility of providing a small elite with a profit opportunity. Meanwhile,
our children are "educated" in a system that increasingly relies on
test scores as a means of judging its efficacy. I'm glad I left high school a
long time ago with my curiosity intact. Oh, and we also didn't have metal
detectors and insane NRA scenarios about armed guards in the halls.

jumped thru every hoop that the edu SYSTEM could muster... now i cannot sleep
thru the nite without at least one TEST anxiety dream. Education here is
exclusively about control (it is only the resister teachers and professors who
undermine it to the students advantage--and they invariably minimize both tests
and grades)

the only way that you can really tell if your kids are being educated properly
is by testing and comparison with other schools. As it stands we have seen some
really lousy school districts claiming they are the best in the nation etc.. ad
nauseum. The only problem I have with testing is allowing any advanced notice
of the nature of the tests at all. For example 7th. grade could be all math
testing one year and all about geography the next without warning. That way we
would have a clue about the real educational level of each child in a school
and teachers would not be able to "teach" to the test. We also need
central scoring of tests such that no one grading the tests has a clue as to
what region they came from.

The stealth neocon president had 3
tasks to perform. Weaken unions and specificlly undermine teachers unions.
Protect the security state and feed the banks and the MIC. Undermine and cut
social security and medicare. Obama is a monster. We should be staging a human
Jumanji stampede through the white house and congress, leaving nothing
standing. Our meekness has enslaved us.
Nonsense.
Ronald Reagan and the right wing busted up the power of unions. As far as
national security we did need more than usual due to attacks. And as far as the
cost of education what do you think the cost of not educating just might be?
How much does ignorance cost America every day? Have you ever noticed the
degree of poverty suffered in nations that do not have electricity, clean
water, telephones in homes or liberal educational practices? If you want horror
go to places that severely limit education.
The campaign to dismantle public
education is the most insidious and vile attempt of all to dismantle what FDR
created: public education, social security, and so many other blessings we take
for granted. If this isn't an attempt to ignite class war, I don't know what
else is.

Denmark, this quote from Lauren's article describes what is happening here

Right now, all public and many
private schools are closed because the teachers are locked out - the gov't
wants to crush the teachers' union.

I think folks in Canada are better off. They will throw out the Tories come the
next election and I predict by a landslide. Yes I think the Liberats will take
the mad dogs out.
Once public money flow is opened to
the private sector you have a feeding frenzy. The private investors know how
much taxpayer money goes to public education and they want it and now that they
have tapped in there is now stopping their feeding frenzy.
We
already have a feeding frenzy in our military which, when it no longer had a
draft to man itself, opened the doors to private contractors to do virtually
everything but the fighting. We poor, dumb taxpayers have been paying through
the nose ever since.
I agree that privatization will be the death of us. Costs will certainly go up and the value of education itself will plumment further than it already has since our corporate masters are not necessarily interested in a well-educated employee as a worker, just someone who knows how to shut up and obey the boss.

Instead of occupying the DOE, why
not eliminate it? Name one really good outcome from Jimmy Carter's brain fart
that couldn't have been accomplished for 1/10th the money and effort.
And the total number of

Families are behind the failure in
schools as well as local governments. The endless "me to" mentality
has ruined our schools. Schools are not and can not accommodate broken kids. It
really is that simple. Education never admitted to the fact that school is a
process of exclusion. As the grades progress less and less young people are
really able to keep up either by emotion, intellect or physical or financial
abilities. It has always been thus. But no one dared utter the truth. Our high
school is Germanic in concept. It is intended to be difficult enough that some
bright, healthy, and eager students can not hold the line and can not be taught
to hold the line. Colleges exclude as a rule. Some colleges can even turn away
the straight A type of students as they simply have more perfect applicants
than they can absorb.
But a few years ago we began to hear
way too much nonsense from parents. They can and do contact politicians and
despite the fact that little darling Johny is a total wreck, with no ability to
regulate himself and without enough sense not to drink gasoline good old mommy
wants him to have a Ph.D. in particle physics and a job that pays millions a
year. And the mayor responds and yanks the chain on the school principals tail.
And they hate testing simply because rotten towns want to attract new business
and with rotten public schools businesses do not move into the area. It is a
social nightmare. The fastest way to improve schools would be to isolate kids
from their families and cut the phone lines to the mayor's office.
Think of the power if parents bring
their kids to Occupy DOE en mass and have teach-ins on the street and in the
park. Bring those patrol vests and march the intersections with the kids. Maybe
invite some congressmen out for a game of dodgeball during gym class.
