Obama's proposal for a "Free Trade" agreement
between the US and European Union is being championed by large corporations,
but public interest groups and environmentalists on both sides of the Atlantic
are vowing to fight the deal.

European farmers, consumer protection groups and Internet activists may block

Long-opposed to the nefarious role that so-called
"FTAs" play in the erosion of state sovereignty, critics object to
the way such arrangements undermine labor and environmental protections,
creating a "global race to the bottom" in the name of
"liberalizing" trade and economic growth.

This newest deal comes at a time of ascendent corporate
power and at the height of austerity-style economics and would be the largest
between developed nations since NAFTA in the mid-90s.

Traditionally, this proposed political empowerment for
corporations has been defended as a way to protect companies from arbitrary
governments or weakened court systems in developing countries. But the
expansion of the practice to first-world relations exposes that rationale as
disingenuous. Rule of law in the U.S. and EU is considered strong; the court
systems are among the most sophisticated and expert in the world. Most cases
brought against the United States under NAFTA have been dismissed or abandoned
before an international court issued a ruling.

But companies have grown increasingly ambitious in recent
years, with major outfits including Exxon Mobil and Dow Chemical challenging
Canadian rules that apply to offshore oil drilling, hydraulic fracturing
("fracking") and the use of pesticides. In December, drug giant Eli
Lilly brought a NAFTA case against the Canadian government after it invalidated
a patent for one of the company's medications.

Speaking out against the deal are US-based groups like
Sierra Club and Public Citizen. And in Europe, coalitions of farmers and trade
unionists are already up in arms about the impact that corporate-controlled
trade agreements would have on them.

trade barriers for genetically modified potatoes and hormone-treated beef. Now
the free trade treaty will provide them with considerable leverage for cracking

For example, American farmers use the hormone rBST,
developed by the agricultural corporation Monsanto. The drug is intended to
increase milk production by up to 20 percent and meat yield by up to 30
percent. But it is also suspected of causing cancer in human beings. In
addition, high-performance cows require additional antibiotic treatment,
because their mammary glands are more likely to become infected.

The concern for US environmentalists like Sierra Club are
centered around the power that corporations stand to gain by the emasculation
of the regulatory authority of governments.

investors to skirt domestic courts and laws and drag signatory governments to
foreign tribunals.

ObamaCorp makes the venality and thuggishness of the Bush
Mob look petty and bungling. Enactment of a US/EU "Atlanticist" FTA
in addition to the TPP that's now being secretly negotiated would move us
pretty close to a technocratic Brave New World-type World State, or even the
black-helicopter One World Government that so darkens the nightmares of
libertarians and the far-right. Goodbye environmental protection, workers'
rights, or anything else that stands in the way of corporate profits -- for
instance, democracy. Hello, proletarian race-to-the-bottom, and the
"fracking of America" for export to Europe and Asia.
Indeed, Europe is already getting a taste of outright
corporate rule as its social democracies and public assets are being stripped
for the benefit of Goldman Sachs. And since ObamaCorp is a subsidiary of
Goldman Sachs, we can be sure that the White House won't rest until it strips
the US of all its public assets, too. This will be Obama's "legacy":
the wholesale looting of America...

Good article today in CounterPunch on the Trans Pacific
Partnership "free trade" agreement (Nile Bowie, "Neoliberal
Overload"), which will likely be the model for any US/EU FTA. I quote:
Due to the unconstitutional nature of the TPP, members of
Congress would likely object to many of its stipulations – naturally, the Obama
administration is employing its executive muscle to restrict congressional
authority by operating under “fast-track authority,” a trade provision that
requires Congress to review an FTA under limited debate in an accelerated time
frame subject to a yes-or-no vote so as to assure foreign partners that the
FTA, once signed, will not be changed during the legislative process. No formal
steps have been taken to consult Congress as the agreement continues to be
negotiated, and Obama looks set to subtly ram the treaty into law. Such is the
toxic nature of US policies that seek to bring in disaster-capitalism on a
global scale, while keeping those whose lives will be most affected by deal
completely in the dark. The message behind this unfettered corporate smash and

Yes. Tom from NC wrote a clever rebuttal some time ago
describing an imaginative letter from Obama written for his daughters outlining
their world of luxury in the decades to come juxtaposed a waste world for
others. I wish I would have copied and pasted it because it now seems entirely

Clinton twisted arms in his own
party to pass the Republican-forged NAFTA and WTO, thus making "free
trade" Democratic Party dogma, Since then, it has served primarily as a
way for Dems to secretly serve their corporate masters (like good little
poodles) by taking back everything they supposedly stand for. Democratic Presidents
get to orchestrate the process.
My understanding is that the
immediate battle will be over "Fast Track" authority, which binds
Congress's hands when considering these trade bills. Write your
Congress-members: defeat Fast Track!
Republicans are also worth
contacting over this: some conservatives oppose "free trade"
agreements because they violate sovereignty; and they'll be reluctant to give a
Democrat Fast Track authority. Try to hold them to their supposed principles,
if you're stuck with a Rethug. The big corps will be whispering in their other
ear and greasing their palms - regardless of party.

I'm a progressive who embraces diversity and believes people
are basically good. My world view centers on this tenet. However, Obama and his
corporate masters are apparently intent on enslaving most of mankind to serve
the interests of the ultra wealthy. Political party affiliation is irrelevant
nowadays- our government is a toxic quagmire controlled by powerful special
interest groups ($), none of which give a damn about my beloved, essentially good,
people just trying to live their lives.

Yes, more harm is often done by justifying action with good
intent even more often when one knows the intent is false most often when given
a choice, make it based on self interest. The self interest of all must be
protected and enforced by law or pure evil will result with capitalism. Greed

Why is the world social system monarchal not republic or
democratic? Is it because of the world’s
conception of god? In short is god one
leader, maker or a whole being of existence?
The world’s conception of god can create the world’s reality
because
what one and all’s belief or faith is what they create or
manifest in the
world. Only in a social system that has its root belief or
faith in a god that is a whole being of existence that IS the one and yet the
all while everlasting is also the I Am where each and all are part.
In other words all
can answer the question who am I really?
We all are I AM the
all that has come, is, or will become.
All are I AM. Only with such
awaking to each ones connection with the ALL will human kind
be able to have a worldwide
democracy. We are not made we are as we
have always been only becoming. So now

In, short the thought is we are all infinite beings beyond
what we perceive and all are connected to all. When we realize our connection
with all the earth, universe, reality, systems, environment etc. we begin to
realize that god as king, lord etc. as viewed by most of the world has to be in
error. The error stems form past writings, beliefs etc.. these beliefs in turn
shape our world. This is a bit like the chicken or the egg which came first
neither they just became and are becoming as we are. If asked who am I, I can
only say I am the sum of all that has come before, all that is and will be no
other wording seems to fit the reality. The problems of mid east, far east,
west, or the world all are as they should be given all that is, but what is
conceived in the moment is where the all begins if not ends. History, faith,
belief, etc. all are becoming as I am and as we all are. We shape our world as
with our vision, belief, thoughts etc. so when the world is what it is we must
examine our belief, thoughts etc. of all. Religion is the greatest influence in
our economic world if we don't think a King, lord etc. should rule then we must
change our thoughts of god. The golden rule is the dollar god, lord, or king?
The corporate world only worships it and gives lip service to any other.

That is all very esoteric and interesting, but: can you
prove it? I'm also curious about which specific philosophy you are describing
here. I also think your answer to the "which came first, chicken or the
egg" question is a bit off-the-mark: they didn't simply "became and
are becoming as we are." Perhaps evolution provides an answer?
It's all humans seem to want: some kind of transcendental,
infinite wisdom. A greater significance than all that we see and observe. I
just think that's a load of bunk. When we die, we become worm-food, just like
all the other monkeys. If that fits your standard of the term
"infinite," then you're thinking so abstractly that the ideas
themselves lose meaning. I suppose it is an argument about metaphysics vs.
empiricism. What you wrote sounds nice, but we have really no way of proving
that it's true, which makes it completely useless.
