Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s largest retailer, has confirmed to the Chicago Tribune that despite protests from environment and food-safety advocates, it will not restrict sales of genetically modified corn in its stores.

The corn will not be labelled and consumers will not be notified that the sweet corn they are buying are engineered by agro-giant Monsanto and genetically-altered (GMO stands for genetically modified organism) to resist the toxic impact of being sprayed with chemical pesticides and herbicides.

“A lot of people who were their customers explicitly said we don’t want you to carry this product, and I think it’s unfortunate that they chose not listen to that feedback,” said Patty Lovera, assistant director of Food & Water Watch. The consumer group had submitted a petition to Wal-Mart with 463,000 signatures, she said.

Consumer advocates argue that too little research has been done on to be certain of the effects such products can have on those who eat or them, but say certain troubling health trends correspond to the rise of GMO foods in the marketplace.  At the least, they argue, such products should be labeled so consumers are aware of what they're purchasing.

“How would you ever know if there are adverse health effects?” said Michael Hansen, a senior scientist at Consumers Union, the policy arm of Consumer Reports. “There has been a doubling of food allergies in this country since 1996. Is it connected to genetically engineered foods? Who knows, when you have no labeling? That is a problem.”

Earlier this year, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and General Mills said they would not carry or use the genetically modified sweet corn.

In California this year, a state referendum is up for a vote that would require all GMO products to be labelled so that consumers are aware if modified ingredients are contained in the products they buy.  The chemical pesticide companies and companies like Monsanto are fighting hard against the measure, fearing that if California, the country's most populous state, passes such a sweeping consumer protection laws other states will likely follow.

The initiative, Proposition 37, will be voted on in November.

Wal-Mart and Monsanto, a marriage made in corporate Hell.
08/04/2012 12:02 PM

Hillary Clinton was a Lawyer for Walmart.
Obama has opened the door for Monsanto in Africa and assigned a former head of Monsanto to the FDA...
I guess that would make Obama and Hillary Ministers?

08/04/2012 06:38 P

dear N8W1der,  did you take a good look at the opposition to Obama?  and what he stands for?  and who is backing him? ..and their performance as NOsayers of our Congressional system...and...that should be more than enough to know.....Obama is our  safer choice......(taking into consideration the common good and our well being.)

We have to learn to stand up for him...when his policies match our needs..and to him...when they do not....and when we learn to take our place as citizens we can grow a democracy..
Yesterd

Ohhhhh toevolve,

Please tell me, tell us all where Obama has stood up for the 99%.

Wall Street? No.
Food Safety? No.
Human Rights? No.
Ending wars? No.
End wire tapping?No.
The Constitution? No.
The rights for public workers? No.
Indefinite detention?No.
Black site prisons? No.
Fighting against TAPP? No.
Massive Jobs programs? No.
Protecting Governmental whistleblowers? No.
Governmental Transparency? No.
Assasinating US citizens?
Cutting Defense spending? No
Universal heathcare? No.

And Yes Romney is worse..
So toevolve, how would you like to die?
With Obama it's through lies and a quiet razor across the metaphorical throat?
Or with Romney through brutality and a metaphorical shot in the head?

I stand in opposition to both death cults that are our two parties and declare both evil and anti-human. You will only know how to fight when you look plainly at your opposition and see them for what they truly are.

So my friend....our thinking is almost congruent.

We both believe that Romney is by far the worse of the two choices.    And coupled with Ryan...who is attractive, a passionate speaker and iron clad strongarm of the Nosayers who signed the Norquist pledge........

clearly your believe that Romney will give us a swift "brutality and with metaphorical shot in the head"......

I am for neither of our two choices...i stand not for or against the candidates..but for the common good...for justice and the "kinder gentler world" that the 1st bush promised us..

And the way to such change...is for us...to grow..and take our rightful place as citizens of an evolving democracy.

OUr first steps ,must include the Romney/Ryan defeat....he must not win..even by default because we voted for a person that,  in our present election circumstance, could not win.

And step two is to get rid of our congressional NOsayers....

And while we are doing that...to fight like hell for the issues.

Did i mention there is a pending boycott starting September against all foreign made goods for an entire month.  and right now there is boycott against Koch Bros goods.  There is also the fight...

 Today 03:21 P

Toevolve,

I vote for Revolt. I vote for millions in the streets. I vote for an on going Nation wide General strike. I vote for the absolute dismantling of the Corporate Cabal that controls the Entire US Government and both parties.
I will not vote for a War Criminal and Wall Street Mascot who assassinates US Citizens freely, who imprisons and Tortures US Citizens whistle blowers before they are even put to trial. I will not Vote for a man who then allows self admitting War Criminals to go free. I will not vote for a man who will not protect the Constitution and actually fights to undermine it. I will not vote for a man who refers to obvious criminals who have destroyed our economy as "Savvy Businessmen" while unable to follow through on a promise to stand and fight with main street public workers and teachers who are under attack.

I've always wondered how atrocities happen but the more read from the"Liberal Class" types who can and will vote for the continuation of this madness and think they are voting for Progress, Justice, the more I realize they are under a self preserving delusion and nothing...
Today 04:09 P

so Mr Tuttle...we meet again.

You are right.....this is something for us to stand up against.  Unfortunately this is the way of most of our courrupted Washington.  As our head of Monsanto was origionally put into his position by Bush.

They are saying that this is a way to feed the hungry of our world........we can say back...this is a way to kill the hungry..and aggrevate the harsh conditions of their lives. And we must do it now because the further the ball rolls, the more acreage and harm will be done to our planet...to us.

And as a balance I have been considering learning...to gather our seeds..and hide them..to grow food in personal farms hidden from the naked eye......
Yesterd

Tell me toevolve did President Obama appoint to the position of Chief Agricultural Negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative a pesticide lobbyist and Vice President for Science and Regulatory Affairs at CropLife America, an agribusiness lobbying group that represents Monsanto?

Or was that Bush too?
Yesterday

It was indeed Bush ...however....it is Obama who continued his presence in the agency....so the fault belongs to both......

Here is the point....Monsanto is powerfull..and Obama believes that this is the answer to world hunger that is coming......And Romney/Ryan and the Nosayers for middle class strenghtening...will not get rid of him....

the answer is not to hurry our demise..but to circumvent it.  This is the bandwagon I want to see you jump on.

Today

The silver lining here could be that people would choose to buy their food (and everything else) in a store other than Wal-Mart!

but in amerika nobody listens to anecdotal evidence (or scientific facts) so that if you say hey dont allow mao mart in our you will have traffic blight ruined roads less competition and no small business, nobody listens. and add insult to injury states use YOUR money as a resident of wherever you live to compete and 'attract' these big boxes who theoretically provide more taxes to keep tax rates down and provide jobs etc while getting upfront tax exemptions in state economic zones for future theoretical things which never ever add up subtracting for all bankrupted companies bankrupted by mao mart. why is china always lectured by US for dumping on US consumers but mao mart does same exact thing and gets tax incentives for unfair competition and doesnt even pay for healthcare for employees; YOU are paying for it. add that to your 'lowest prices always' bu!!sh!t.

Mao mart STILL gets these and it is already virtually EVERYWHERE! and PROOF is that over a decade mao mart still pays no taxes (part of deal 'attracting' the big box is their not paying taxes for a decade or so).  more traffic since there is usually no traffic...
