Grassroots groups across the United
States are mobilizing against the nation's powerful biotech firms as a new
round of labeling laws for foods made with genetically modified organisms
(GMOs) make their way through state legislatures.

"The biotech [industry] is
seeing growing mass support across the US and they have fewer useful resources
to combat truthfulness and popular support," said Jim Gerritsen, president

Biotech firms, including Monsanto
and other 'Big Ag' industry groups, were behind the defeat of an
earlier labeling initiative, California's Proposition 37, after bankrolling a
widespread misinformation campaign.

Gerritsen's statement came on the
heels of a small victory in Maine Tuesday night when the Legislature's
Agriculture Committee voted 8-5 to approve Bill L.D. 718 which would prohibit retailers from labeling
a product “natural” if it contains GMOs.

The vote followed the Friday passage
of Bill H.112 by the Vermont House of Representatives which
requires foods containing GMOs to be labeled, marking the "furthest any
such legislation has made it through the legislative process in the United
States," according to PR Watch.

The New England states are just two
of a coalition of thirty-seven states currently mobilizing for GMO labeling. Of
these, twenty now have legislation slated for introduction this year.

A local paper reports that one third of Vermont’s legislators were
co-sponsors, "signaling the bill’s broad public support." Similarly,
according to Gerritsen, an astounding 91 percent of Mainers favor the labeling
of genetically modified foods.

According to the Kennebec Journal, Maine Attorney
General Janet Mills—who supports the measure—told lawmakers that the
legislation is “almost certain” to face a legal challenge from the
industry. “These entities are very litigious,” Mills told the committee.

Monsanto has already threatened to
sue Vermont if the legislation passes.

"excellent position" to combat any legal challenges. What they are

percent of American consumers would not purchase foods made with GMOs if they
knew about their presence. Not sharing that information, he says, indicates a
"level of deceit" on the part of food companies.

As the Maine bill progresses,
supporters are "very hopeful" they will receive passage in both the
House—where a record 123 legislators (out of 186) are cosponsoring the bill—and
Senate.

when something is good the folks that make it want to let you know what's
inside, so i would guess that means monsanto has something to hide or wish you
to not find out! WHY?

If they are not forced to label it, I will view it as contaminated/poisoned and will not buy it. I think we may find that the farms/producers NOT GMO frankenshite will proudly advertise that fact. Such as: Organically Grown-GMO free.

thought exactly- if their product is so great, you'd think they'd WANT credit
for it on the products that contain it..
Yes.
I buy Nasoya doufu, and right under their logo they state, black on yellow,
"made with ORGANIC non-GMO WHOLE SOYBEANS". No frankenfoods for me!
When
you have something good you want to shout it from the rooftops!
However,
when you have a really bad commodity you don't want people looking to closely.
To
get rid of the crap you buy some gov. puppets to make the law so you don't have
to worry that the dummies will ever even know what their buying.
It
is time for farmers whose crops are ruined by pollen blowing from fields where
Monsanto Crops are being grown to start suing Monsanto for destroying their
clean crops
If
it only was possible. The courts have so far decided that it is the farmer that
is responsible for getting their plants contaminated.
Monsanto
could not ask for a better bought legal system.
The
law need to be rewritten to say that if plants are contaminated the owner of
the patent is responsible to compensate for a maximized harvest and pay for a
none toxic decontamination of the area.
But
with the best government money can buy that will not happen.
They
will use whatever leverage they think they have -- and being a global criminal
enterprise embedded in many governments and agricultural systems (not, of
course, minding a bit that their conduct and policies are driving farmers in
India and probably elsewhere to suicide) -- they have a lot and will play total
hardball to keep on having their way with the global food supply and cash flow.

other corporations that do not treat their employees right, don't pay enough
and use questionable resources and environmental actions. That said, its sad
that we in the usa are condemned to eat questionable food while the rest of the
world is discontinuing GMO's and crops by gmo's Its time for Monsanto and their
ilk to discover that if they want customers to buy their products than they
better learn to tell the truth and be what we want. The corporations have
forgot that without One thing I find really sad is the fact that many brands
make food for Europe without the 'added gmo's' and then sell to americans the
food with added gmo's

always comment first and then read comments after and was amused to see that we
both posted about the app that is now available.
Who
is Monsanto anyway? Where are they? Names and faces. Places. Who is in charge?
What lobbyists? Which politicians do they own? Lets get real. They aren’t some
monolith. How do they own the market?
The
identities of senior managers is on public record usually in their Annual
Report. The majority stockholders are a little more difficult to tease out of
the digital morass in which they are hidden, but a skilled financial researcher
could learn who they are. I've always thought the facelessness of corporations
was a bad deal for public accountability.
Very
few of the senior officials make decisions on their own -- they wouldn't dare.
Usually the CEO is a semi public figure but one who never seems to know what's
been going on when scandalous corporate behavior is outed. The blame gets
shoved down to underlings who manage to elude being identified and paying any
penalty unless someone has to be publicly scapegoated so the illusion of
probity can be maintained.
But
to strip away the corporate cover and begin to publicly splash a bunch of blame
on individuals with names and faces combined with large doses of scorn for
their denial strategies could at least get some responsibility put where it
belongs.

Well, actually, the man on the radio isn't saying it all that much, and THAT is
also part of the problem
Is
it the GMO, or the Round-Up?
Round-Up
ready plants are GMO. That of course makes it possible to use more Round-Up,
which in itself can not be a good thing.
But
even GMO that is not Round-Up ready have caused problem in test animals
whenever test are done by independent researchers.
Fact
is that the industry have no idea what the long term effects are, only that
there is short term effects that is covered up for the sake of the profit.
Concerning
a legal response to GMO crops, what is necessary is to go to the source of the
issue: the judiciary. Progressives should begin a long campaign centering on
two policies. First, calling for drastic reduction in funding for the Federal
judiciary. Such a funding policy should not be as difficult as one might think.
About two years ago, a poll indicated for the first time since polling, the
judiciary had an approval rating below 50% of the public. A radical cut in
funding should send a message to the courts, and probably engender a lot of
necessary retirements, with moderate public fuss.
Second,
progressives should call for a second judiciary act stripping the Supreme Court
of appellate jurisdiction. In substitution should be a supreme court of appeals
(or whatever else it might be designated), composed of a panel of justices
drawn from all the Federal judicial districts. For individual cases, justices
could be selected according to availability and perhaps region. Additionally,
term limits could be implemented. Finally, the anti-democratic principle of
judicial review should be explicitly excluded from the authority of the
reconstructed Federal judiciary.
Such
a system would be more representative of the populace, and much more consistent
with democratic principles. Keep in mind, the judicial principle of stare
decisis--i.e., precedent--is little more than a means of preserving the
bigotries and ignorance of the past and, to boot, the bigotries and ignorance
of an aristocracy of nine at the level of the Supreme Court. Implementing these
changes, the Supreme Court can continue to sit in aristocratic splendor amid
the insignificance of Constitutionally provided original jurisdiction.

in Jackson County, Oregon (Ashland/Medford), we have gotten a GMO ban on our
ballet, to be voted on in a year from now. We are confronting a Big-Ag bill in
the State legislature that would override local ordinances. March on Monsanto
May 25!
If
Monsatan wont let food containing their poisoned products then let label ALL
FOOD that does NOT CONTAIN GMO, So then we know if it doesnt say NO GMO
products in this food, we know that it DOES contain it and so avoid it, its the
only way to kill Monsatan, by money and their bottom line, if not they kill the
planet and us ALL.

there should not have to be a need for a social experiment and to defend the
people. It should be a given one how it should be everywhere. The government
should protect the people first and way later the companies profit.
