Moore Lappé and Vandana Shiva, noted figures in the food sovereignty movement,
added their voices to the chorus blasting the 2013 World Food Prize going to
GMO scientists with the biotechnology giants Monsanto and Syngenta.

The
GMO scientists' work contributes to hunger and ecological devastation while not
advancing nutrition, said the two Right Livelihood Laureates, also Councillors
on the World Future Council, and noted the irony of Monsanto being awarded at a
time of rising worldwide opposition to the seed giant.

Lappé
and Shiva's remarks echo those of the U.S. Food Sovereignty Alliance, which
stated that the prize going to the biotech giants “sends precisely the wrong
message about sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty.”

the GMO work by the winning scientists "betrays the mandate of the very
World Food Prize," explains Lappé, "which is all about focus on the
importance of nutritious food and food for all, whereas GMO seeds, their design
and the way they are spread to the world has nothing to do with better
nutrition."

fact, to take advantage of these seeds, small farmers who are among the
hungriest people in the world, have to take out loans to buy the costly
products that are required—the seeds, the fertilizers... and the pesticides
that are required" for the GMO seeds.

World Food Prize explained that the GMO work by the new winners has

times the world's population by conserving and intensifying our biodiversity,
saving our water, rejuvenating our soils. That's agro-ecology. The new science of agriculture, of working
with nature, and not against her. It's also the science that small farmers
practice to bring 80% of the food to the world. It's not the gene giants."

to try and divert the public's attention" away from rising global
opposition.

The
key to any kind of real change is to undo the brain washing that has taken
place over the decades, that has convinced people that the corporation is a
source of what they need. Most people take for granted that pepsi, coke,
General mills, Kraft, etc.... are just a background that provides them what
they need. Most people when you begin to explain how corporations are the
problem, do not even comprehend what you are telling them, mostly, because they
haven't any idea of any other way they can get what they need... (or think they
need).... Alternative sources of food etc... have to be explained and a new
system shown to people so they can see how it works.

Establish
a new prize and give this one to the people who have earned and deserve it. As
Vandana Shiva has suggested, this is a stunt to divert attention from the fact
that the world is waking up to Monsanto and it's phony technology that doesn't
do any of the things it has promised and on the other hand, does a lot of
things Monsanto is trying very hard to hide.

The
only "bad guy" here is Fraley. He's responsible for "Round-up
Ready" crops and is Chief Technology Officer fro Monsanto. The other two
are some of the more prominent scientists who discovered how to use plant
bacteria to introduce new gene sequences. Blaming them for the bad uses
bioengineering has been put to is akin to blaming Prometheus when your
fireplace sparks and burns down your house.
My take is that these two got a sorta
"lifetime achievement" award to cover Monsanto giving one of its
senior managers an award. ;)

Yeah,
but why the "World Food Prize", even for the two scientists, and that
too with the claim that their work "contributed significantly to
increasing the quantity and availability of food," when the supporting
evidence is dubious at best? It's like Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize.
Some other award, I don't know, something for his election campaign for the
ads, or maybe best supporting actor award for reading a teleprompter or
something like that may not offend people that much.

Anybody,
and I mean anybody, associated with Monsanto is tainted by their malfeasance.
This multi-national corporation is one the most, if not the most, aggressively
monopolistic and underhanded mob that has been allowed to stalk the future of
plant food. What they have done to control seed viability around the world has
severely jeopardized future seed stocks on which much of humanity depends.
"In the 1980s and 1990s, chemical
companies moved to purchase privately held seed companies in order to
capitalize on the profits that genetic engineering promised. The modus operandi
was to buy a company, retire the seed stock, and offer their own seeds.
Monsanto went on a shopping spree.
"...there are two kinds of
expansion. One is horizontal, the consolidation of smaller companies that
operate within the same sector in order to decrease competition. In vertical
expansion, a corporation dominates all aspects of production. The corporate
giants were practicing both types of integration; Monsanto moved vertically
from chemicals to seeds, then horizontally through seed companies.
"...Under the header American
Seeds Inc. (ASI), in November 2004 Monsanto acquired three Iowa seed companies
- Crows, Wilson, and Midwest. In 2005, Monsanto announced that it intended to
expand and spent $1 billion for Seminis, the world's largest producer of fruit
and vegetable seed. In one fell swoop, Monsanto was the largest seed and
biotech company in the world. It surpassed DuPont...
"By 2006, ten companies
controlled half the globe's commercial seed sales...In 2007, the top ten seed
companies accounted for 67 percent of the market. In 2009 Monsanto's market
share for seed corn was 36 percent."
