The
'end of the world' it is not, says president of Bolivia, but rather an
opportunity to dispose of 'capitalism's greed' and unite in happiness and
unselfishness

Bolivian President Evo Morales is
marking today's winter solstice and the much-discussed calendar date by
celebrating a hopeful vision for a "new era of peace and love" in the
world, one in which the spirit of community and respect for Mother Earth will
win out over the greed induced by global capitalism.

In an open invitation to celebrate
the day, Morales explained that "the Mayan calendar's 21 of December
is the end of the non-time and the beginning of time. It is the end of the
Macha and the beginning of the Pacha, the end of selfishness and the beginning
of brotherhood, it is the end of individualism and the beginning of
collectivism."

you who bet on mankind, we invite those who want to share their experiences for
the benefit of mankind."

Morales, a champion of indigenous
rights and himself a descendent of the Andean Aymara people, helped supplant
the idea that the 2012 winter solstice marked the "end of times" or
an "apocalypse" by clarifying that the lunar happening was simply an
opportunity for spiritual renewal. Though auspicious for the Mayan people, most
of the loud rhetoric clamoring about the "end of the world" is a
Western invention, pushed by those who know little of the traditions or spirit
of the indigenous people and their deeper history.

Morales will mark the day by
boarding one of the largest reed ships built in modern times and join thousands
of people for celebrations on the Island of the Sun on Lake Titicaca.

The Bolivian government has hailed
the solstice as the start of an age in which community and collectivity will
prevail over capitalism and individuality. Those themes have long been present
in Morales’s discourse, especially in the idea of vivir bien, or living
well. He has stressed the importance of a harmonious balance between human life
and the planet, though some people question its application in Bolivia, where
the economy depends heavily on mining, oil and gas industries.

from a recent trip to the Mayan regions of Central and South America that there
is little or no sense that the day marks the end of anything in a physical
sense.

Throughout our trip, we encountered
many ordinary Mayans from every walk of life to check out their reaction to the
supposedly doomsday prediction. Most of the Mayans we spoke to were largely
baffled by the question; others flatly denied that there was any reason that
the world would come to an end. Told that a lot of conventional wisdom behind
the doomsday scenario in the rest of the world supposedly derived from ancient
Mayan texts, they politely replied that they were not aware of any such
prediction or text.

In every place we visited, whether
in a large city like Merida or a smaller town like Celestun or Uayamon, we
found the local people going about their business in perfect calmness without
any concern for any impending apocalypse.

Perhaps that was because no such
apocalypse is foretold. David Stuart, a noted Mayan and Meso-American
specialist at the University of Texas at Austin, observed in his book The
Order Of Days: The Maya World and the Truth About 2012, that "no Maya text – ancient, colonial or modern –
ever predicted the end of time or the end of the world."

a good begining let us replace greed with compassion for all.
Today is a day when our minds can be
truly free to imagine a new future, to dream in new directions. This is a gift
we give to ourselves. The world is on the edge, whatever prophesies may or may
not say. Stare deeper into the abyss, and wake up from the nightmare. Imagine a
world where all are free and living in harmony with our planet. Image a world
without debts, without fear, without loneliness, where people trust everyone
and everything, whatever happens, for we all work together even following our
own paths. Peace.
So it's all been a media hoax. Who
profited from it should always be the question. Much like all this "fiscal
cliff" blather.
It is also by the way the Winter
Solstice. So for my pagan friends: Happy Solstice.
Thank
you for the wishes. Happy Solstice to you, as well! Funny, isn't it, how the
pagans were the ones in touch with the motions of the sun and earth - the
reality based community - while the Christians were the ones lost in their
dreams of a heaven, hell, purgatory - the important stuff was never here, it
was always in a make-believe land somewhere else. Time for us to come back to
Mother Earth and try to respect her the best we can.
Christianity
got lost when the Roman Empire found it's state religion. Jesus wasn't talking
about going to some other place when we die. He was talking about bringing
Heaven here, by everyone throwing away money and power and becoming free-loving
hippie pacifists.
His
message got lost when the Catholic Church was founded and Christianity gained
power. Power is the antithesis of love and peace.
Will the greedy 1% capitalists heed
the proposal? If not, we need to somehow make sure that they do.
Unfortunately
what one did not see during the last televised presidential debates were any
socialist candidates such as Stewart Alexander being allowed to participate in
those "debates" since the last thing that the Commission on
Presidential Debates wanted was anyone challenging that less than egalitarian
system known as capitalism.
Hehe,
well, I can just imagine a well-spoken and well-prepared Marxist or other
socialist candidate having an equal discussion with either of the big money
assholes. It would be an absolute intellectual massacre. These people have no
arguments that stand up to reason.
It
might have been something worth watching. What we got were debates six graders
could have done a better job with.
And
the socialists -in the U.S.- have no candidates that can stand up on TV. The
fact that TV debates don't hold complex thoughts well doesn't help either.
The
one percent is corporate and government systems all designed by and for GREED
even charity is often disguised gaming scam systems no more real than
Insurance, religion, injustice, or anything else designed for gaming or
exploitation for profit. This one percent world provides no motives for
cooperation except to game for profit the system. The ball and the chain is
greed we sale soul for life or liberty we think great but in fact we enslave
ourselves for position, place, or some measure of considered contentment. The
one percent feel gaming works because it works for them, profit works because
it works for them, government works because it works for them, education works
because it works for them. The one percent fools self because they are not the
system only percived winners in the game. All monopoly’s except the monopoly of
the Whole is unjust and unreal and in the end doomed. The only question is when
more becomes enough in this system of more? Greed hurts all in the end no one
escapes its madness or its justice.
Will you believe in President
Morales’s so eloquently stated vision as the voice of a legitimate
inevitability? As we sit, stand, sleep, or walk every moment we have the
opportunity to respect and affirm this evocative crying aloud of Time and human
experience or ignore it.
Every moment, and everywhere you
look to see, stands now a condition of circumstances that evinces a status you
may be able (thanks to the given lives and work of already so many) to
recognize as either consistent with that healthy natural human vision or
calling you to speak up for the part in correction it is yours to forward. We
are an unfolding miracle.
Stand speak free. And pray, as some
do, that the blind will come to see, as we each may remain every day in the
stand to remove our own blindness more fully.
President Morales has the makings of
a true "world leader."
Wouldn't it be wonderful if this
solstice did mark the beginning of a new era? An era of earth and its populace
beginning to learn to live together in peace and cooperation, respecting the
earth which feeds us?
And, perhaps a chance to see that
government of the people, by the corporations, for the corporations, shall
finally perish from the earth.
I
would indeed. But I am guessing more will see January's inaugural event as more
meaningful. And celebrate that corporations are once again the first priority
of our government.

probably right, but I can dream, can't I? ;-)
From
my understanding of astrology and the Mayan calendar, the best
"prediction" I saw was that power would shift from the west...maybe
to the south or east. I'd take what's happening in South America overall.
Number
7: Living well as a solution to the global crisis, because we affirm once again
that one can only live better byonce we stop plundering natural
resources. This is a profound
debate that I would like to have with the world.
Many have declared this a “day of doom,”
A terribly destructive operation.
Yet many consider a new day may loom,
A new day, one of love and cooperation.
Now, humanity, earth and life may bloom!
So far has the pendulum swung,
Over to the side of the wealthy few
Lording it over those who live among
Starving, homeless people, even taking their stew.
The rest of us hope, that in their mouths, it will turn to dung.
In the coming years may our hearts turn away from greed.
Care for all and love of earth may provide the seed,
Ever protecting man and earth from need.

If I were his security detail, I'd
procure a geiger counter to check for trace amounts of polonium that might slip
through to the president.
A fine message from Evo Morales. I
can't recall Obama's last state of the union speech, but I think he may have
had a different sort of message, with talk about the killing of Osama bin
Laden, etc. That sort of thing was a big hit, too, at the Democratic National
Convention. What a difference in elected leaders! National messages do have
import, and can cultivate either high values or savagery.
The story of the ancient Mayan
civilization is really fascinating because of its elite structure, culture of appeasing
the gods through sacrifice (though not of the elites!) and its seemingly swift
disappearance after a period of high collaboration that produced exquisite art
and architecture, a lot of which is still inscrutable. Given what it was, it's
no wonder that its history should be abused by various fiction writers. I admit
that in my naive youth, I was fascinated by Erich von Daniken's book,
"Chariots of the Gods," which postulated that Mayan art figures were
actually showing visitations by space aliens, depicted as gods. The popular TV

My understanding is that ALL the
Mayans (mysteriously?) disappeared.
So how can The Guardian be talking
to modern day Mayans?
Perhaps these people live in the
same region that the Mayans once did and perhaps they believe they're
descendants of the Mayans but that doesn't mean they're Mayans.
They're
definitely Mayans. NO Mayans "(mysteriously?) disappeared". The
ancient Lowland Maya city-states underwent a rapid collapse in about AD 700
-900. That is all. The people in the region today have closer cultural,
language, and genetic ties to the ancient Lowland Maya, than modern Greeks do
with the ancient Greeks.
According
to Wikipedia, there are about 7 million Maya living in Mexico, Guatemala,
Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. It does mean they're Mayans, since their
ancestors were Mayans.

The
matriarchal one that burned it's city down every 60 years and rebuilt on top of
